Did you know that St. Valentine’s Day was known as the Feast of St. Valentine? Wait. Did somebody say “feast”? You have our attention! But for those romantics at heart, it gets even better:
The most popular association of Saint Valentine was that he was sent to prison for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians (who were persecuted under the Roman Empire) during his imprisonment. But here’s where every great romantic story includes tragedy (get out the kleenex):
During his imprisonment, Saint Valentine is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. It was later said that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her.
As tragic as that is, it is filled with promise, hope and the belief that love prevails – whether it be romantic love or just “love”. And, since it was traditionally known as a day of feasting, we felt particularly compelled to share with you some Valentine’s Day inspiration.
